Padma Bridge among 3 projects picked by Fast Track Committee

The first meeting of the Fast Track Project Monitoring Committee picked up Sunday Padma Multipurpose Bridge, Nuclear Power Plant and Coal Based Big Power Plant for quick implementation, reports UNB.

The meeting was held at the Prime Minister's Office with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina directed the authorities concerned to take up the projects as priority ones.

Earlier, the committee selected seven mega projects under the fast-track approach, aiming to achieve a seven-per cent-plus growth rate.

The priority projects include a deep-sea port at Sonadia, an LNG terminal, nuclear power plant, Padma Bridge, a series of coal-fired power projects, Asian superhighway and the metro-rail scheme.

PM's press secretary Abul Kalam Azad briefed reporters after the meeting.

He said the Prime Minister directed the authorities concerned to give special attention to the projects considering the greater interest of the nation.

The Prime Minister also witnessed a power-point presentation on various aspects of the projects.

About the Padma Bridge issue, the Prime Minister said the complex part of the Padma Bridge project was land acquisition and the government has done it successfully. The government has spent Tk 15 billion (1500 crore) on this purpose.

She asked the authorities concerned to speed up other related activities of the Padma Bridge.

Meanwhile, the government proposed Tk 68.52 billion in the next fiscal for the construction of Padma Bridge, and planned to invite international tender for the works by June 30.

After the World Bank withdrew from the financing deal, the government decided to build the bridge with internal finance. The World Bank had committed $1.2 billion in loans, the ADB $610 million, Jeddah-based IDB $140 million and the JICA $400 million.
