Stocks return to positive zone

Dhaka stocks returned to the positive zone on Tuesday but the turnover declined despite some state-owned entities’ efforts to keep the market afloat after the recent fall. The benchmark general index of the bourse, DSEX, finished at 4,127.61 points, advancing 0.66 per cent or 27.25 points. The blue chip index of the bourse, DS30, advanced by 1.59 per cent, or 24.38 points, to finish at 1,552.20 points. The DSEX and DS30 had lost 39.94 points and 17.06 points respectively on Monday. The turnover of the bourse declined to Tk 456.72 crore on the day from the previous trading session’s Tk 478.86 crore.

Market operators said that some state-owned entities had been active on the trading floor on Tuesday in an effort to keep the market afloat. On the other hand, a vested quarter was busy to pull down the market as some regulatory moves had dejected them, they said. A section of investors are inactive on the trading floor, observing the political situation from distance before making their next move, which is another reason behind the recent sluggishness in the market, added the operators. ‘Despite being red at the beginning, upbeat tone after mid-session helped DSEX to come back into green zone and gain 27.25 points. This upturn was backed by investors’ focus on fundamentally strong and lucrative scrips,’ IDLC Investment said in its daily market commentary.

‘Alongside the sectors, scrip wise shuffling assisted this sentimental push; as index was holding its position above 4,100 points for the last seven sessions. Conversely, investors were materializing quick return amid their meticulous trading policy as overall market was showing volatility for the last few sessions,’ it also said. Among the 287 shares and mutual funds traded on the day, 152 advanced, 100 declined and 35 remained unchanged. Grameenphone led the turnover chart on the day as its shares worth Tk 46.97 crore changed hands.
