ADB, two other donors to give $450m for Meghna water purification plant

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and two other European donors would provide US$450 million in loans to the government to set up $675 million largest water treatment plant for treating the Meghna river water in Narayanganj, officials said Saturday. The Economic Relations Division (ERD) officials said the ADB has agreed to provide $250 million loan in a two-day negotiation last week. Besides, a France donor AFD and European Investment Bank (EIB) have also assured Bangladesh of providing $100 million loan each for setting up the treatment plant in a bid to supply more surface water to the capital city through pipeline, the added.

"We met for negotiations with the ADB on Wednesday and Thursday last. The multilateral donor has agreed to provide the money to the Dhaka WASA," said a senior ERD official. After getting the funds from the ADB, the AFD and the EIB for the $675 million project, this will be largest investment by the Dhaka WASA for supplying pipe water to Dhaka city, home of nearly 14 million people. Under the Dhaka Environmentally Sustainable Water Supply Project, the three donors will provide $450 million funds to set up the treatment plant and necessary infrastructure for supplying the Meghna river water to the capital.

The Dhaka WASA will set up the treatment plant at Gandharabpur in Rupganj upazila for treating 500 million litres of water per day from the Meghna river first time investing $675 million. The Dhaka WASA has supplied nearly 87 per cent ground water while only 13 per cent surface water including treatment of the river water in the capital city Dhaka. According to the DWASA, it will collect raw water installing 21.5 kilometre pipeline from the Meghna river to the plant. After treating the water at Ghandharabpur, the WASA will supply it to Dhaka city through installing 13km pipeline by December 2019, WASA officials said.

The DWASA through its Sayedabad water treatment plant purifies 450 million litres of water daily and supply those to the consumers in the capital. The DWASA officials said they would reduce dependency on ground water and improve supply of the surface water to 70 per cent instead of current rate of 13 per cent in the next 10 years. Currently, the WASA supplies nearly 2.25 billion litres of water daily. It has 620 deep tube-wells and four water treatment plants for supplying water to the city.
